How to add an AI chatbot to your website (step by step)

Add an AI chatbot trained on your own content to any website — WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, Wix, Squarespace or custom — in under an hour, with the settings that keep answers accurate.

01

Before you start: decide what the chatbot should do

Write down the five questions visitors ask most and what a good outcome looks like for each — an answer, a booked meeting, a captured lead or a handoff. This list becomes your test set and keeps setup focused.

02

Step 1: Give the chatbot your knowledge

An AI chatbot is only as good as what it learns from. Start with your website: pricing, product, shipping, returns and FAQ pages. Add PDFs or docs for anything that isn’t public yet.

In ResolveX, enter your website URL and the pages are imported as knowledge. Review them and approve what the chatbot may use — this is what keeps answers grounded instead of invented.

03

Step 2: Set tone, handoff and limits

Choose a name, a greeting and a tone that matches your brand. Then decide when a person should take over: low confidence, specific topics such as refunds or legal questions, or simply when the visitor asks for a human.

  • Handoff when confidence is low
  • Always hand off sensitive topics
  • Collect name and email before handoff outside business hours
  • Turn buying intent into a lead in your CRM

Step 3: Install the widget

Every major website builder lets you add a script to all pages. Paste the chatbot snippet just before the closing body tag.

  • WordPress: use a header-and-footer code plugin, or your theme’s footer.php
  • Shopify: Online Store → Themes → Edit code → layout/theme.liquid
  • Webflow: Site settings → Custom code → Footer code, then publish
  • Wix: Settings → Custom code → Body – end, all pages
  • Squarespace: Code Injection → Footer
  • Google Tag Manager: Custom HTML tag on All Pages

Step 4: Test with real questions, then launch

Ask your five most common questions in different words. Check that each answer is correct, cites the right page and hands off when it should. Fix gaps by improving the source page, not by patching the bot.

After launch, review a sample of conversations weekly. The questions the chatbot couldn’t answer are a ready-made list of help articles to write.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Can I add an AI chatbot to my website for free?

Many tools offer free trials. ResolveX includes a 7-day free trial with AI text replies; after that it’s $15 per agent seat per month with 50 AI resolutions included.

Do I need to code to add a chatbot?

No. You paste one script tag into your website builder’s custom-code setting. Developers can add it to the root layout of any app.

Will a chatbot slow down my website?

A well-built widget loads asynchronously after the page, so it doesn’t block your content from rendering.
